Keanu Reeves is uncertain about his future as John Wick, expressing concerns that his body might not handle another physically demanding action movie.
The 60-year-old actor has starred in four “John Wick” films, which have collectively grossed over $1 billion, and will return as the iconic assassin in next year’s “Ballerina” spinoff. However, the prospect of “John Wick 5” may hinge on the condition of Reeves’ knees.
During a recent appearance on CBS Mornings to promote his role as the villainous Shadow in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, Reeves was asked about the possibility of reprising his role for a fifth John Wick film. “You can never say never — but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick,'” Reeves admitted. “So my heart [wants to], but I don’t know if my knees can do it.”
What does the director Chad Stahelski say?
As for “John Wick 5”, the ambiguity of Chapter 4’s ending has left fans wondering if Reeves will return.
In a 2023 interview with Empire, director Chad Stahelski revealed that a more definitive ending had been filmed, one where John Wick survives the duel. However, this version conflicted with Reeves’ preference to see the character’s story end for good, especially given the toll filming takes on him physically. Producer Basil Iwanyk confirmed that Reeves had asked to be killed off at the end of Chapter 4, but the producers ultimately chose not to honor that request.
While Lionsgate has previously expressed interest in a fifth installment, it has yet to be included on the studio’s release calendar. In the meantime, Reeves has suffered a knee injury while filming the upcoming comedy “Good Fortune” directed by Aziz Ansari.
