After a humiliating exit in the group stage of the T20 World Cup, Captain Babar Azam has offered to step down from his role. However, he emphasized that the entire team shared accountability for their struggles. Pakistan finished third in their five-team group with four points, losing to both India and the United States, who advanced to the Super Eight stage.
“We did not perform well as a team; it isn’t because of one person that we lost. We could not click as a team,” Babar said during a post-match press conference in Florida, after his side beat Ireland.
Captain Babar led Pakistan through a tense chase, ending their T20 World Cup campaign with a three-wicket win over Ireland in the final Group A match, which was a dead rubber as both teams were already eliminated.
“We did not play well as a team; it isn’t one man’s responsibility. Although I am the captain, I can’t be everywhere. Just like I said, we didn’t click as a team,” the skipper reiterated.
Regarding his captaincy, Babar stated he had offered to resign when he felt it was necessary and had announced it himself. “The PCB returned the captaincy to me, and when we go back, we will discuss what transpired here. If I have to step down, I will announce it publicly myself,” he said.
“For now, I haven’t decided yet. If the PCB chairman thinks there’s a need for a change, we’ll talk about it.”
Babar Azam has played 52 matches in his Test career, scoring 3,898 runs with an average of 46. In his ODI career, he has played 117 matches, scoring 5,729 runs with an average of 57. He has also played 123 matches in his T20 career, scoring 4,145 runs with an average of 41.
