Controversial cases against former Prime Minister Imran Khan continue to attract criticism from the international community, with another global parliamentary body announcing plans to monitor the ongoing court hearings involving the PTI founder.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) — an international organization promoting democratic governance, accountability, and cooperation among national parliaments — has decided to send an observer to Pakistan. Khalid Yousuf Chaudhry, a member of Imran Khan’s legal team, confirmed that the observer will attend proceedings in the £190 million case and the Toshakhana series of cases.
Chaudhry described the trials as part of a campaign of “political persecution” rather than legitimate legal accountability.
He also said that discussions with the IPU would highlight the GHQ case, in which Khan was indicted on May 9 without substantial evidence or credible legal grounds, raising concerns about the impartiality of the justice system.
The IPU observer, expected to visit Pakistan in the coming weeks, will have the authority to assess the conditions of Khan’s detention in Adiala Jail and evaluate trial procedures.
