Every year, pop culture and fashion meet in a stunning display on the VMA red carpet.
Since its inception in 1984, the award show has been known for bold and often unconventional style moments. The very first VMAs set the tone when Madonna performed “Like a Virgin” in a wedding dress, and nearly 40 years later, several stars seemed to honor the Queen of Pop with their outfits.
Addison Rae and Anitta both embraced daring bridal-inspired looks, with Anitta completing her Dolce & Gabbana ensemble with a veil and stilettos. Meanwhile, Artist of the Year nominee Sabrina Carpenter channeled vintage Hollywood glamour in a strapless Bob Mackie gown, famously worn by Madonna at the 1991 Oscars.
Pop sensation Taylor Swift, in a Christian Dior dress, dominated the night, taking home seven awards.
The night also saw rising star Chappell Roan crowned Best New Artist. Sporting a metallic outfit and headpiece, she dedicated her win to drag artists and her LGBTQ+ fans. Other big winners included Blackpink’s Lisa, who snagged Best K-Pop Video for “Rockstar,” South African artist Tyla, who took home the Afrobeats award for “Water,” and Brazilian singer Anitta, who won Best Latin Video for “Mil Veces.”
