LAHORE: The Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has warned that Pakistan today is at the crossroad in its constitutional history where it can be like Turkey or become another Myanmar.

His comments came as Supreme Court heard the case of delay of elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where secretaries of Defense and Finance were to submit reports about security situation in both the provinces as well as availability of finance to hold elections.
It is pertinent to mention here that Turkey is known for its strong democratic traditions and institutions, and Imran Khan is suggesting that Pakistan can follow Turkey’s path by upholding the Constitution, Rule of Law, and democracy. On the other hand, Myanmar has been ruled by military dictatorships for most of its history, and recently experienced a coup that overthrew its democratically-elected government.

Turkey last foiled a military coup on July 15, 2016. A faction of the Turkish Armed Forces attempted to overthrow the democratically-elected government led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, the coup was quickly put down by pro-government forces and civilian protesters on just one video call by Erdogan. The failed coup resulted in the deaths of over 250 people and led to a widespread crackdown on opposition groups and perceived enemies of the government.
Today we stand at a turning point in our Constitutional history where we can be like Turkiye or become another Myanmar. Everyone must choose whether they stand, as PTI does, with Constitution, Rule of Law & democracy; or with a corrupt mafia, law of the jungle & fascism.
