Renowned Islamic preacher Dr. Zakir Naik drew criticism after expressing displeasure with the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for offering him only a 50% discount on excess baggage.
Naik, who was visiting Pakistan for a series of lectures, had brought over 1,000 kg of luggage. Despite being a state guest, he was expecting the airline to waive the charges for excess baggage, as had been his experience in India.
“I was coming to Pakistan. Our luggage was 1,000kg. I spoke to the PIA CEO. The station manager told me that he would do anything for me. I replied, ‘I have 500 kg to 600 kg extra luggage.’ He offered me a 50% discount. I told him, ‘I will bring four more people, as it will get cheaper. I asked him to give it for free or leave it.'”
Naik rejected the offer of 50% discount for 500-600 kg of excess baggage. He argued that in India, he was often allowed to travel with significant amounts of luggage without charges, and that he expected similar treatment from Pakistan.
Naik’s comments quickly went viral on social media, sparking a heated debate. While some defended his stance, others criticized him for his perceived arrogance. Some users pointed out that PIA had been facing financial difficulties and that offering a 50% discount was a generous gesture.
