Amid severe inflation, cities like Peshawar, Lahore, and other locations in Punjab have experienced a sharp rise in chicken prices.
In Peshawar, the cost of live chicken has surged by Rs20, reaching Rs490 per kilogram, while chicken meat is now priced at Rs735 per kilogram. Traders in Peshawar attribute this increase to rising costs for feed, chicks, and electricity, which have significantly raised the overall expense of poultry production, subsequently driving up market prices.
In Lahore and other Punjab cities, the price of chicken has also soared, with poultry now selling between Rs610 and Rs630 per kilogram.
This rise in chicken prices follows a period during Eid when rates were below Rs400 per kilogram. The increase in meat prices is driven by high demand compared to mutton and beef, compounded by increasing feed costs. As a result, the higher cost of this essential protein source is putting additional strain on household food budgets.
