The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) will meet today (Thursday) to finalize the selection of judges for the Sindh High Court (SHC).
The commission will evaluate 46 candidates competing for 12 vacant positions, including four female candidates—two lawyers and two district and sessions judges (DSJ). The candidates’ overall performance will be assessed, with a recent emphasis on their case disposal rates.
Prominent female candidates include DSJ Tasneem Sultana, ranked second on the seniority list of SHC’s subordinate judiciary. She joined the judicial service in 1994 and is set to retire in May 2026. She previously worked as an accountability judge, disposing of numerous cases, including three references and 21 bail applications.
Another candidate, DSJ Munawar Sultana, holds the fifth position in seniority. She joined in 2005 and has delivered over 900 judgments as a sessions judge in Khairpur. She will retire later this year.
Umaimah Anwar Khan, daughter of former attorney general Anwar Mansoor Khan, is also in the running. She holds an LLB from the University of Sussex and was called to the Lincolns Inn as a barrister.
Shazia Hanjra, a lawyer who previously served as the special prosecutor in the Baldia Town factory fire case, is another notable candidate.
