High electricity bills have been a source of agony for many Pakistanis, particularly those from lower middle class and lower income backgrounds, as they have been known to encourage suicide.
On Sunday, news of another such tragedy surfaced: a poor guy from Taxila, Punjab, committed suicide after receiving a huge electricity bill.
According to the police, the deceased, Nadeem Akhter, 38, of Mohallah Parri, near the railway station, was having serious financial problems, and an electrical bill of Rs50,072 made matters worse.
Akhter had two sons and an equal number of girls. After completing the necessary legal procedures, the body was moved to the hospital and subsequently given to the family.
Earlier in Punjab, a woman by the name of Razia Bibi is said to have killed herself due to an inflated electrical bill.
Razia Bibi was ill and receiving medical attention, according to her relatives. The electricity bill was settled with cash on hand at home.
