The UAE’s Digital Government has released a comprehensive guide for new students preparing for the upcoming academic year, detailing the visa and residency requirements, as well as the procedures for applying for a golden residency.
The guide addresses common questions and dispels any uncertainties students may have.
Eligibility for a Student Visa:
Foreign students can obtain a student visa if they are sponsored by either their parents residing in the UAE or the university/college where they intend to study. Specialized student affairs offices in universities assist with the visa application process.
Validity of the Student Visa:
The student visa is initially issued for one year and can be renewed for a similar period upon submission of official proof of continued study provided by a recognized higher education institution in the UAE.
Required Documents:
Applicants need a certificate from their university specifying the duration of study, along with any other documents stipulated in the general provisions for a residence visa.
Family Sponsorship:
Foreign university students meeting financial criteria can bring their families to live with them in the UAE. Male students under 25 can be sponsored by their parents, while female students can be sponsored regardless of age.
Golden Visa Eligibility:
Outstanding high school students achieving a state-level ranking of at least 95% may qualify for a five-year golden residency visa, with no guarantor required. UAE university students meeting certain criteria can obtain a 10-year residence visa, provided their university is classified as (A) or (B) by the Ministry of Education.
Processing Time:
Express processing for student visas takes approximately 10 days, while regular processing may take 15-20 days. Visas are valid for 12 months and must be renewed for longer programs.
Application Timing:
It’s advisable to start the visa process one to two months before the semester begins. Renewal documents should be submitted at least a month before the visa expiry date.
Work Opportunities:
International students can work on-campus or off-campus with university permission. Those with university sponsorship can apply for part-time job permits through the UAE Labour Department.
Cost of the Student Visa:
The approximate cost of a student residence permit is Dh2,500, excluding additional fees such as security deposits, file opening fees, and document legalization or translation fees. An additional fee of Dh500 applies.
