During the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat meeting on Friday, Senator Saleem Mandviwala raised an intriguing issue. He questioned why the second wife of a member cannot become a member of the prestigious club located near Constitution Avenue.
Mandviwala highlighted what he saw as an unjust policy of the Islamabad Club, which does not recognize a member’s second or third wife, thereby barring them from entry. Given Islam’s allowance of up to four marriages, he underscored the perceived inequality.
At a subsequent meeting, when he sought clarification on the matter, the special secretary of the Cabinet Division clarified that the division had no jurisdiction over club membership policies, deeming it an internal club matter.
Chaired by Senator Rana Mahmoodul Hasan, the committee convened at Parliament House to scrutinize the operational procedures of the Cabinet Division and its subsidiaries, as well as their performance over the past three years.
Moreover, the committee reviewed issues including Toshakhana gifts and policies, challenges encountered in the verification processes at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the status of bulletproof vehicles, and the policy governing civil awards, among other matters.
