ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is set to meet later today to discuss the request by the federal government, seeking to postpone by-elections in 12 constitutions, as well as Local Bodies polls in Sindh, citing the security situation.
The by-polls on 12 constituencies of national and Punjab assemblies are scheduled for October 16 as well as the second phase of local body elections in Sindh on October 23.
Official sources in Islamabad said the ECP had summoned the chief secretaries of Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as well as the IGs of the three provinces as well to take stock of the situation. Besides these, the secretaries of Interior and Defense ministries, as well as DG Military operations are also expected to attend the meeting.
The interior ministry, it may be recalled, had written a letter to the ECP, seeking to postpone by-polls scheduled for October 16 citing credible intelligence reports that a political party was planning to besiege the federal capital between October 12-17.
