ISLAMABAD: The government has announced to set up protection centres and safe houses to ensure the rescue, protection and rehabilitation of transgender persons.
In this regard, a consultative meeting for the transgender protection centre was organised on Thursday at the Ministry of Human Rights. Transgender leaders, activists, representatives of different government institutions and departments along with the civil society participated in the meeting.
The meeting decided that the government shall establish protection centers and safe houses to ensure the rescue, protection and rehabilitation of transgender persons. Furthermore, the government will provide medical facilities, psychological care, counseling and adult education to transgenders.
Toward this end, the Ministry of Human Rights is taking an initiative to establish a ‘Protection Center for Transgender Persons’ and creating a platform where the community can feel safe and their grievances can be heard.
The protection centre will be designed to ensure safety, protection, provision of immediate medical attention and promote accountability. These services are aimed at addressing the spectrum of violence by providing immediate guidance, counseling and basic education of human rights.
