Federal Minister for Power, Awais Leghari, has revealed that the government is considering the introduction of a prepaid electricity meter system, akin to the prepaid model used in mobile phones.
During a media briefing in Multan, Leghari stressed that this initiative aims to enhance consumer services and could serve as an effective measure to combat electricity theft.
He pointed out that addressing the vulnerabilities in the power sector is crucial, and the adoption of prepaid meters would not only help prevent theft but also improve transparency in billing.
The minister also mentioned that the Punjab government has provided Rs45 billion in relief and that ongoing discussions are being held with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) on the matter.
He further said that the capacity payment has surged due to the depreciation of the rupee, but assured that electricity prices are expected to decrease significantly within a year.
He added that a visit to companies in Sindh and Balochistan is planned within the next 1-1.5 weeks.
