ISLAMABAD: The federal government is considering a proposal to abolish the Saturday weekly off, reinstating a six-day work week for government offices. The Cabinet Division has requested recommendations from all ministries on this matter.
In 2022, the federal cabinet had introduced two-day weekly holidays in government offices as part of an energy conservation plan.
According to media reports, the Cabinet Division will present these recommendations to the federal cabinet for a final decision.
The sources noted that although the two-day weekly holidays were intended to conserve energy, they did not achieve the desired results.
It is expected that the cabinet will discuss the abolition of the Saturday off-day after the Eidul Azha holidays.
Earlier, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government had approved the reinstatement of the Saturday weekly off in government offices under the energy conservation plan. Additionally, protests by government employees had pressured the federal government to reverse its earlier decision to restore the six-day work week in May 2022.
