Google is launching a new set of advanced theft protection features aimed at safeguarding your device and data from theft attempts – whether before, during, or after. These features will be gradually introduced through updates to Google Play services later this year, reaching billions of devices running Android 10 or higher. Some functionalities will also be accessible on Android 15.
In Android 15, users can expect enhanced screen sharing controls, including the ability to conceal private notification content and hide the screen during sensitive activities like entering passwords or credit card details. Moreover, Android 15 will introduce a feature to share content from a single app, a capability currently exclusive to Pixel devices.
Google emphasizes the importance of clear indicators for content sharing, promising a more prominent screen indicator on Android devices later this year to always signal when screen sharing is active, enabling users to cease sharing with a simple tap.
To counter threats posed by malicious actors using cell site simulators for surveillance or sending fraudulent SMS messages, Android 15 will notify users about unencrypted cellular network connections and alert those at risk if a cellular base station or surveillance tool is tracking their location. However, these features will require compatible hardware and device OEM integration.
Moreover, Google is enhancing the Play Integrity API to empower developers to check for other applications capturing screens, displaying overlays, or controlling devices. Developers can also verify the functionality of Play Protect and ensure device cleanliness before executing sensitive actions.
