On Monday, Gwadar International Airport’s inauguration marked a historic milestone for Pakistan’s aviation sector as the first commercial flight, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) PK-503, touched down at the newly constructed airport on Monday, after departing from Karachi.
Defence and Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif was present at the airport to welcome the passengers, joined by federal and provincial government officials and senior military personnel. The flight’s arrival was celebrated as a major step forward in the region’s development.
Gwadar International Airport is Pakistan’s second greenfield airport, designed to handle large aircraft, including the Airbus A380. With the ability to accommodate such massive planes, the airport is poised to become a key hub for international travel and trade.
Construction of the airport began in 2019, with an estimated cost of Rs 50 billion, part of which was funded by a Chinese grant. The project was completed in November 2024, signaling the airport’s readiness to boost connectivity and serve as a gateway to the region.
The state-of-the-art facility is equipped to offer refueling and cargo services to over 50 airlines daily. This development is expected to significantly enhance the economic potential of Gwadar and the surrounding areas, opening new avenues for international trade, tourism, and business.
