KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a case against two former chairmen of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and a former acting chief executive officer (CEO) on charges of causing losses of over Rs1.25 billion to the national exchequer.
According to details, FIA Corporate Crime Circle Karachi has also arrested former director engineering of the national airline, Maqsood Ahmed, on charges of corruption. Other nominated in the case were ex-chairmen Nasser Jaffer and Irfan Elahi and former acting CEO Bernd Hildenbrand.
The case has been registered under sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 109 (punishment for abetment) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and section 5 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
An FIA spokesperson claimed that the body arrested Maqsood Ahmed on “the basis of solid evidence”, while efforts were afoot to apprehend the remaining accused in the mega corruption case.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered special audit of the national flag carrier, which led to audit para No. 12.1.3 pertaining to corruption and corrupt practices by the PIA management in the up-graduation of business class seats, in-flight entertainment service and integration of both.
The FIA inquiry revealed that the then chairmen of PIA Nasser Jaffer and Irfan Elahi, the then acting CEO Hildenbrand, former director engineering Maqsood Ahmed and others caused huge loss to national exchequer without the supply of any contracted goods or services.
