The federal government has approved a comprehensive upgrade of the Grand Trunk (G.T.) Road (N-5), with plans to transform it into a uniform three-lane carriageway modeled on motorway standards.
This decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, focusing on the road’s repair and expansion.
The project will be executed in two phases, aiming to enhance the quality and consistency of infrastructure along the entire stretch of the historic N-5. Minister Khan highlighted that the initiative is a strategic priority, intended to ensure long-term economic benefits and improve national connectivity.
Officials from the Ministry of Communications, Planning Department, Economic Affairs Division, and the National Highway Authority (NHA) shared practical recommendations aligned with the available funding. The minister emphasized the importance of efficient use of financial resources and directed all relevant departments to explore and implement feasible improvement proposals.
Khan also criticized previously launched projects that lacked financial viability, stating that the current focus on modernizing key transport corridors like the N-5 is more economically sound.
He announced plans to personally inspect project sites and instructed senior officials to conduct field visits to monitor progress and ensure timely execution at each stage.
