Google has begun rolling out a new Gmail feature that automatically generates AI-powered summaries for long email threads.
This update introduces a summary card that highlights key points from multiple messages within a conversation, helping users quickly grasp the main takeaways without scrolling through each email. As replies are added, the summary will update automatically to reflect the latest information.
Currently, the feature is limited to emails written in English and requires users to have smart features enabled in Gmail, Chat, Meet, and other Google Workspace tools. The rollout is expected to take approximately two weeks.
At this stage, the feature is not yet available for standard Gmail accounts or desktop users. Google has not confirmed if or when broader availability will follow, though recent developments hint at a possible wider release in the future.
Depending on the region, the feature may be turned on or off by default. In the EU, UK, Switzerland, and Japan, it will be disabled by default due to regional privacy considerations. Users can manage the feature under Gmail’s “Smart features” settings, while organization-level access can be configured by administrators via the Admin console.
In its official announcement, Google reaffirmed its commitment to user privacy, stating that all AI features in Gmail are designed with strong data protection measures. Meanwhile, industry voices like Richards from the Android Faithful podcast acknowledge that while some users may prefer to avoid AI in their inboxes, the technology is becoming an integral part of modern communication tools.
