Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas’s Fatah movement has called on its Islamist rival Hamas to step down from power in the Gaza Strip to ensure the survival of the Palestinian people.
Fatah spokesman Monther al-Hayek expressed concern for the future of Gaza, stating that Hamas must “show compassion for Gaza, its children, women, and men” and recognize that the continued governance of Hamas could lead to the destruction of Palestinian existence in the region.
Hamas has controlled Gaza since seizing power from Fatah in 2007, and despite several attempts at reconciliation, the two factions remain divided.
The situation in Gaza has worsened following the escalation of conflict, particularly after the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas and other Palestinian on Israel, which led to widespread Israeli retaliation.
The Israeli military continues to target Gaza following the October assault, and ongoing airstrikes and ground operations have caused severe devastation.
Israel has also threatened to annex parts of Gaza unless Hamas releases all remaining Israeli hostages from the October 7 attack.
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with nearly 50,000 people in Gaza killed according to the Hamas-run health ministry, and over 1,200 Israeli deaths, mostly civilians, as reported by Israeli authorities.
