FAISALABAD: A woman has been arrested by local police on charges of blasphemy after allegedly claiming to be an Islamic prophet.
The woman, identified as Sanaullah, was taken into custody from her home shortly after a mob had gathered outside demanding that she be lynched. The mob had gathered after news spread of her alleged claims of prophethood.
According to a senior police official Nasir Ali Rizvi, the woman was arrested along with two other people after a doctor approached local police and narrated the entire episode. He added that she would be brought before a judge to face the charge against her.
The blasphemy charge in Pakistan can carry the death sentence under the country’s laws.
The woman’s alleged claims of prophethood have sparked outrage and condemnation from conservative Muslim groups in the country.
It is pertinent to mention here that blasphemy is a highly sensitive issue in the country, and anyone accused of insulting Islam or its prophet can face serious consequences, including the death penalty.
