MM News: In the current scenario where negative news is spreading in Pakistan, you have achieved an honor for the country. How do you perceive your achievement?
Dr. Muhammad Shehbaz: I’m aware that there is a proliferation of negative news in Pakistan. In such circumstances, if a small piece of positive news emerges, it uplifts the nation’s morale. I have done what I could to boost the morale of the nation.
MM News: Considering the economic challenges Pakistan is facing, do you think the country needs experts like you?
Dr. Muhammad Shehbaz: While sitting abroad, I am serving the country in two or three ways and contributing to the country’s good name. The theory of comparative advantage suggests that one should focus on what one can do best. I believe that by being outside the country, I can serve the country in a better way.
MM News: You are among the top 10 economists globally. Don’t you feel that your contributions can significantly improve the country’s economy?
Dr. Muhammad Shehbaz: I have always tried to be the best for my mother, and the day will come when my mother will take pride in the fact that her son has done the best work to illuminate the name of our country. Some institutions in Pakistan act as stakeholders in the economy; once they decide to set things right, they can achieve it.
MM News: Pakistan was facing the threat of being blacklisted by the FATF. How did you contribute to overcoming this challenge?
Dr. Muhammad Shehbaz: We first need to renegotiate the agreements with IPPs. We are using expensive means to generate electricity, and we need to change that. When we decided that the dollar needed to be controlled, we tightened the indicators of governance and achieved the target.
MM News: Pakistan seems to be lagging behind in the field of energy. What is your experience in this context?
Dr. Muhammad Shehbaz: In my opinion, the first thing we need to do is renegotiate the agreements with IPPs. We are using expensive means to generate electricity, and they need to be changed. Smog is spreading pollution, and it also needs to be addressed.
