The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has received a request to impose an additional burden of nearly 67 billion rupees on consumers through an increase in the power tariff by Rs 7.13 per unit.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) submitted an application to NEPRA on Tuesday, seeking approval for the electricity price hike, citing monthly fuel adjustment for January.
If NEPRA approves the request, consumers will bear an extra burden amounting to Rs66.77 billion. The hearing on the CPPA’s request is scheduled for February 23.
It’s noteworthy that the caretaker government increased the price of petrol by Rs2.73 per litre for the next fortnight last Thursday. As per the notification from the Finance Division, the new price of petrol stands at Rs275.62 per litre, up from the previous Rs272.89. Additionally, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) witnessed an increase of Rs8.37, now priced at Rs287.33 per litre.
Earlier this month, NEPRA had already announced a hike in the cost of electricity by Rs4.56 per unit. The recent application from CPPA suggests another potential increase in electricity prices, adding to the financial challenges faced by consumers.
The outcome of the NEPRA hearing on February 23 will determine whether the proposed hike will be implemented.
