Eid-ul-Adha – the most expensive festival

Imran Ali Shah by Imran Ali Shah
July 18, 2020
Eid-ul-Adha is a religious festival in which Muslims perform the Sunnat-e-Ibrahimi by sacrificing animals. However, it has now become a large business. During the occasion, not only the trading of sacrificial animals but also various kinds of businesses associated with it flourish.
On the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha (in economic parlance) the circulation of wealth reaches its peak. Despite larger cattle markets, several small markets are also set up with the patronage of the district police and the local administration. Even in these illegal markets billions of rupees are traded.
The cost of the fodder for the sacrificial animals also skyrocketed. People are forced to buy fodder at exorbitant prices. In this regard, fodder worth billions of rupees are sold on Eid-ul-Adha.
On the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, the income of butchers increases by 600 percent. Butchers raised rates for slaughtering sacrificial animals. Most of the butchers demand Rs20, 000 for slaughtering a camel Rs15,000 to 20,000 for a cow and other big animals. Rs 5000 to 10,000, for a goat or sheep the rates will be reduced up to half for the second or third day of Eid.
The business of decorating sacrificial animals also increases during Eid-ul-Adha. People usually set up several makeshift stalls and markets and sell knick-knacks and ornaments like beads, anklets, and collars. This is also a seasoned business worth millions of rupees. During these days, veterinarians also come to the field, treating sick animals for a hefty fee.
The business of blacksmiths and knife sharpeners also witness an upward boom on eve of Eid ul Azha. Knife sharpeners also demand higher prices on this occasion. Various stalls are set up with special machines installed in it to sharpen knives, axes, and beef cutters. The shops also sell Bar-B-Q instruments, which is also a latter business.
Thus a business of about four and a half trillion rupees is associated with sacrificing animals. That is why citizens call this Eid-ul-Adha the most expensive festival. Apart from extravagance, whatever Muslims spend is in fact a sacrifice. However, it is important to remember that this sacrifice is for Almighty Allah, and showing off can vain the sacrifice.
