No, it’s a not a joke, Jonathan Meijer is a father to at least 1,000 kids.
Jonathan Meijer is a Dutch musician accused of traveling worldwide and deceiving women into bearing his offspring on an unprecedented scale. Initially claiming to donate sperm to only a few families, it soon became evident that he had deceived many more.
According to The Guardian, Meijer began donating sperm at a Dutch clinic in 2007, despite Dutch law explicitly limiting sperm donations to 25 children per donor from up to 12 different mothers. By 2017, it was revealed that his sperm had been used to conceive an astonishing 102 children, leading to a ban on further donations in the Netherlands. Undeterred, Meijer continued donating abroad, reportedly using different aliases to gain acceptance at multiple clinics across various locations.
Last year, a Dutch court ordered Meijer to cease his activities after discovering he may have fathered up to 600 children in the Netherlands since 2007. Some mothers, stretching as far as Australia, estimate the global total to be closer to 1,100 children and doubt that Meijer has halted his actions.
This extraordinary tale is now the focus of Netflix’s new three-part docuseries, “The Man With 1000 Kids.” The series undertakes the daunting task of unraveling the chaos caused by Meijer across multiple countries and continents. Beyond his involvement with 11 sperm banks in the Netherlands and private donations, Meijer extended his sperm donations globally.
The docuseries includes interviews with affected parents who continue to grapple with the aftermath of Meijer’s actions. It also features commentary from a lawyer, fertility activist, and medical professionals who have been working to curtail his activities.
Currently, there exists a YouTube account attributed to Meijer where he discusses his sperm donation journey. His current whereabouts are unknown, though he is believed to be traveling the world, as evidenced by videos showing him in locations such as a beach in Tanzania and Italy.
In response to the Netflix documentary, Meijer said he declined to participate, noting that the working title, “The Fertility Fraudster,” was something he found unacceptable. He criticized the documentary as sensationalistic and misleading, arguing that it fails to emphasize his role as a donor. Meijer also disputes the use of the number ‘1,000,’ claiming it is inaccurate.
