ISLAMABAD: A day after reported the highest death toll since the third wave of the pandemic, Pakistan on Thursday reported another 118 deaths from the novel coronavirus.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 118 deaths from coronavirus, taking the death toll to 15,872. There were 5,395 new coronavirus cases in the past day while the total number of cases recorded so far reached 739,818,
The total number of active cases has surged to 77,294 while the positivity rate stood at 8.3 percent. The number of critical patients who remain in in hospitals has also increased to 4,681.
There were 64,685 coronavirus detection tests conducted in the past day, taking the total number of COVID-19 tests to 10.942 million since the first case was reported. Overall 646,652 people have recovered from the virus including 4,740 in past day.
Punjab continues to remain the worst affected area with 41,472 active cases. There have been 258,441 cases and 7,209 deaths in the province so far. Islamabad has recorded 68,066 cases and 625 deaths while there are 12,839 active cases in the region.

The number of coronavirus cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have reached 102,290 cases and 2,761 deaths while there are 12,998 active cases in the province. Sindh has recorded 270,310 cases and 4,533 deaths while Balochistan has recorded 20,580 cases and 221 deaths.
A day earlier, the coronavirus monitoring body issued a set of new coronavirus guidelines in order to mitigate the adverse effects of the virus during Ramazan.
Amid the alarming surge in coronavirus cases, the forum decided to implement “broader lockdowns”, with stringent enforcement protocols where no mobility will be allowed except in emergency situations.
Saturdays and Sundays will be observed as closed days at the national level. The coronavirus monitoring body will review the situation after 10th Ramazan.
