KOHISTAN: A huge blaze broke out at a camp operated by a Chinese company managing the construction of a hydropower dam in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during the wee hours of Tuesday.
According to reports gathered from police and local sources, the pre-dawn blaze destroyed a warehouse complex for the Dasu hydropower project in the Kohistan district, located about 180 kilometers north of Islamabad.
Local eye witnesses said the fire was first reported in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after which authorities were immediately alerted. Rescue 1122 official present at the scene of the incident said, “It was a huge fire. Initially, the flames were very high and we had to call for fire brigade vehicles from two other districts.”
The warehouse complex, which was the center of the fire, stored various items, including oil drums, stationery, and machinery. The warehouse was entirely destroyed in the fire, leaving nothing but ruins behind.
The camp was home to Chinese engineers, surveyors, and mechanics. Officials said luckily, no injuries or casualties were reported.
According to one police official, an electrical fault is suspected to have caused the fire. The incident is still under investigation, and the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
