It may be recalled that earlier, the Supreme Court had issued notices to all Advocate Generals and Speakers of Provincial Assemblies on the presidential reference regarding holding Senate elections through the open ballot, stating that any party can submit its objections if it so desires.
A five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan heard the presidential reference. The Attorney General of Pakistan said that the reference raised the legal question of not holding the Senate election by secret ballot.
