In a distressing incident of animal cruelty in Sindh, a camel was found dead with all four legs amputated in the Umerkot, Tharparkar.
Unidentified individuals severed the camel’s legs, leading to its death due to excessive bleeding. The mutilated animal was discovered near MorJhangu turn of the Kanri area, where passers-by alerted the media. An eyewitness reported finding the camel in the morning with its legs cut off, indicating the crime took place overnight.
The camel’s owner expressed grief, stating, “The camel was with the other camels, and in the morning, I received information about this. The camel is dead.”
SSP Umerkot Asif Raza took notice of the incident and dispatched an investigation team. He emphasized that if the camel was amputated alive, the perpetrators would face severe punishment. SSP Umerkot directed DSP Kanri to conduct an immediate inquiry. The SHO Kanri, accompanied by a veterinary officer, arrived at the scene to investigate and perform a post-mortem examination.
Initial reports suggest the camel was amputated post-mortem, possibly to incite anxiety and unrest in the area. However, confirmation is pending the post-mortem results.
Earlier this month, in Sanghar’s Mundh Jamrao area, a similar case of brutality occurred when a landlord and his employees allegedly tortured a camel and amputated its leg for straying onto his land. The incident, captured on video, led to widespread condemnation and the arrest of six suspects, who were remanded for two days.
The injured camel, now named Cammie, was transported to Karachi for treatment and rehabilitation by a non-governmental organization. Bioniks Pakistan is preparing an artificial limb for Cammie, and a harness structure has been set up to help the camel stand.
