Bushra Bibi, the wife of former prime minister Imran Khan, was released from Adiala Jail on Thursday, a day after securing bail in the Toshakhana case, marking the end of her nearly nine-month-long detention.
Her release followed the Islamabad High Court’s decision to grant her bail with surety bonds worth Rs1 million. She had been in custody since January 31, when a court convicted both her and Imran Khan of retaining and selling state gifts, in violation of official regulations, during Khan’s tenure as prime minister.
Despite media personnel and supporters from PTI waiting outside Adiala Jail, Bushra Bibi left swiftly without interacting with anyone. Supporters, however, showered her vehicle with flowers as it drove away.
Although the IHC had granted bail on Wednesday, her release was delayed due to the absence of a judge to sign the necessary orders. Today, Judge Shahrukh Arjumand completed the formalities by signing her release document.
It should be noted that on January 31, an Islamabad accountability court convicted both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana reference, barring them from holding public office for 10 years and imposing a fine of Rs787 million each.
