BAHAWALPUR: Police said on Monday that they body of woman, who was allegedly subjected to torture by policeman Mir Hasan on a train, was found near Chani Goth Railway Station in Bahawalpur. However, the victim’s brother claims the officer tortured and killed his sister, then disposed of her body on a railway track.
The incident gained attention after a viral video depicted the police officer holding the woman by her hair and assaulting her while fellow passengers remained passive.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Railways Abdullah Sheikh said that the altercation occurred on April 7 aboard the Millat Express en route from Karachi to Lala Musa.
The woman, identified as Maryam Bibi from Jaranwala, Faisalabad, was reported missing after leaving Karachi on April 7 to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with her family.
Maryam’s brother, Afzal, revealed that she worked at a beauty parlour in Karachi. He expressed shock upon learning of her death, initially told by Bahawalpur police that she had fallen from the train. It was only with the circulation of the viral video that the true nature of her demise emerged.
Afzal accused the policeman of brutally ending his sister’s life and demanded accountability. Despite their pleas, the police failed to take any action.
According to Maryam’s nephew, who was traveling with her, the altercation began when Maryam was reciting aloud, prompting the officer to initiate the assault. He then forcibly separated them at the next station.
Police reported that Maryam Bibi’s postmortem was carried out at Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Ahmedpur, with results pending.
