In Pakistan, like in any other country, people, especially the youth, aspire to live peaceful and fulfilling lives. However, as domestic conditions grow increasingly challenging, more and more young Pakistanis are opting to move abroad in pursuit of this dream. The latest Economic Survey 2023-24 has confirmed a troubling trend: a staggering 119% increase in the emigration of highly skilled professionals in 2023 compared to the previous year.
Despite Pakistan’s abundant young and dynamic human capital, many of its youth are compelled to leave their homeland, risking their lives and property. The statistics tell a stark story: 45,687 skilled individuals left Pakistan seeking better opportunities abroad, up from 20,865 in the preceding year. This surge in brain drain undermines the government’s promises of fostering a prosperous future for the nation.
The repercussions of this exodus are felt nationwide. Punjab led the wave of emigration with 489,301 laborers seeking work overseas, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 210,150 departures. Sindh and the tribal areas accounted for 72,382 and 36,609 emigrants respectively.
According to a Gallup report, a significant majority of young Pakistanis surveyed expressed a desire to work and study abroad, with half of them stating they had no intention of returning to Pakistan. Popular destinations for Pakistani emigrants include Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Malaysia, UK, Bahrain, Romania, and Iraq.
