KARACHI: A large number of Karachi University’s students, U.S Consulate Karachi officials, volunteers and concerned citizens, participated in a beach cleaning activity on Wednesday.
A total of 100 garbage bags were collected from the six-kilometer-long coastal line during the campaign. In order to raise awareness, U.S Deputy Cultural Attaché Cameron Thomas-Shah briefed the participates on pollution adversely affects marine life and the importance of environmental protection for the future.
He said “Plastic pollution is damaging our freshwater bodies and oceans. It poses a serious threat to both freshwater and marine he said concerned have to need to take this issue seriously and act now before losing the rich biodiversity.
He said plastic consumption is increasing day by day. Environmentalists have always demanded a ban on its production, sale and use.
Citing to a report he said around 450 million gallons of untreated waste from industries in the Karachi enters into the Arabian Sea every day.
He added however, there are no current estimates on the composition of the waste that enters the sea. Thomas-Shah said plastics on the beach left by picnickers and beachgoers are carried with water currents to the sea and harm marine life.
The participants vowed to take care of their surroundings and to keep their community clean in Pakistan.
