Producers StudioCanal and Monumental Pictures have dropped the first teaser trailer for the hotly-anticipated Back to Black, the upcoming music biopic on the late Amy Winehouse.
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, whose study of the early years of John Lennon, Nowhere Boy, brought her considerable acclaim, the film features newcomer Marisa Abela as Winehouse, the London soul singer who rose to fame with debut album Frank in 2003 and 2006 follow-up Back to Black.
Winehouse died aged 27 in 2011 of accidental alcohol poisoning. She was previously the subject of an independent documentary, Asif Kappadia’s Amy, which was released in 2015 and won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
In her short career, she sold more than 30 million records worldwide. While she enjoyed stratospheric success, Winehouse struggled with addiction and intrusive media attention.
“Back to Black” has received support from the Amy Winehouse Estate, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing. The film is slated to hit theaters on May 10 from Focus Features.
