Senior journalist Ayaz Amir’s ex-wife and mother of Shahnawaz, who is the prime suspect in Sarah murder case, filed a petition in an Islamabad court on Monday seeking pre-arrest bail.
Police have already detained Shahnawaz for allegedly killing his Canadian national wife. Shahnawaz reportedly confessed to committing the crime and claimed that he “thought” his wife was having an affair with another person. Only three months of their marriage were spent together.
Ayaz Amir, his father, was also detained for his apparent participation. Shahnawaz and Ayaz were both given to police on a physical remand that will end today.
Shahnawaz’s mother Sameena Shah has also been served with an arrest warrant in this case, although she has not yet been taken into custody.
In the petition filed with an Islamabad sessions court today, Sameena insisted that Shahnawaz had sent her a WhatsApp message regarding a Rakshati, which is when a lady formally vacates her home to move in with her spouse. She added that her son had called her at 9:12 a.m. to inform her of the murder.
“I sprinted inside the room, but Sarah had already been killed. Shahnawaz was instructed to remain in the room while Ayaz Amir called the police.” Sameena stated in the plea.
She claimed that after being informed of the crime, the Islamabad police arrived at the spot quickly.
Sameena requested the court to accept her pre-arrest bail plea, terming the FIR “false and frivolous” and stated that she had no connection with the case or the murder. “But her name is being mentioned by the media that an application has been moved for her arrest,” the petition said.
