Australia has introduced a new visa program aimed at attracting skilled workers to address workforce shortages across key industries.
The Skills in Demand (SID) visa replaces the previous Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa and offers more streamlined pathways for professionals seeking to live and work in the country.
The SID visa is structured into three distinct streams. The Specialist Skills Pathway is designed for top-tier professionals who can drive innovation and contribute to economic growth. The Core Skills Pathway focuses on meeting the workforce demands of priority sectors, while the Essential Skills Pathway targets industry-specific agreements, with additional details to be announced soon.
To simplify the application process, Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has reduced the work experience requirement for the SID visa to just one year, making it easier for skilled workers to apply for permanent residency. Applicants must also meet English language proficiency standards.
As part of the program, the government has released a Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), which includes over 450 occupations in sectors like healthcare, construction, and technology. Salary thresholds for the SID visa vary, ranging from AUD 70,000 to AUD 135,000. Professionals earning above AUD 135,000 may qualify for the Specialist Skills Pathway.
This updated visa program reflects Australia’s commitment to addressing critical skill gaps and fostering economic growth by welcoming qualified professionals from around the globe. Officials have confirmed that more details and updates will be shared in the coming weeks.
