Pakistan People Party(PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday was elected as the new President of Pakistan for the next five years.
He became the 14th president of the country. He also served as president from 2008 to 2013.
Ruling alliance joint candidate Asif Ali Zardari secured 47 electoral votes from the Balochistan Assembly, while PTI-backed SIC candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai could not secure a single vote in the provincial assembly.
In the Sindh Assembly, Zardari clinched 58 electoral votes, while Achakzai got three votes. Achakzai bagged 91 simple votes in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and Zardari managed to get only 17 simple votes. In Punjab Assembly, Zardari, secured 246 simple votes while Achakzai got 100 simple votes.
In the National Assembly and Senate, Zardari secured 255 electoral votes while Achakzai received 119 electoral votes. In total Zadari received 411 electoral votes, while Achakzai got 181 electoral votes.
The polling occurred in the Senate of Pakistan, the National Assembly, and the four provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, designated as polling stations. A secret ballot was conducted from 10 am to 4 pm.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended congratulations to Asif Ali Zardari for winning the presidential elections and assuming the presidency as the 14th president of the country.
