A Moroccan court is set to trial an Israeli soldier for alleged war crimes committed in Gaza amid widespread protests and a high-profile national lawsuit.
Moshe Avichzer, who was on holiday in Marrakesh, has been taken into custody and is facing prosecution. He had recently served a three-month deployment in Gaza, where he is accused of committing war crimes.
Avichzer’s arrest followed his social media posts, where he shared images from his vacation in Morocco, alongside pictures of himself in Gaza amidst the destruction of Palestinian homes. The controversy surrounding these posts led to legal consequences while he was still traveling.
According to the New Arab, a court in Rabat accepted the lawsuit, categorizing the accusations as terrorism-related. Lawyer Najia El-Hadjaji, a member of the legal team, noted that the case was initially dismissed by the Attorney General in Marrakesh before being taken up by the court in the capital.
The lawsuit claims that Avichzer’s actions during the Gaza conflict included acts of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and other war crimes, which he allegedly boasted about on social media.
