LAHORE: The Home Department of Punjab on Sunday almost entirely changed the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) which was assigned talks to probe into the assassination attempt on the life of PTI Chairman Imran Khan which took place on November 3 in Wazirabad.

Imran Khan, it may be recalled, was leading party’s Long March when on November 3, his convoy came under fire, allegedly from multiple directions, at Allah Wala chowk. Khan was injured with 13 other workers while one of his follower, Moazzam, had lost his life.

Punjab government had formed a Joint Investigation Team, headed by Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar and comprising Regional Police Officer D.G Khan Syed Khurram , AIG investigation branch Ehsanullah, Superintendent of Police Potohar Rawalpindi Malik Tariq Mehmood and SP counter-terrorism department Naseebullah.

However, CCPO Dogar sent a report to the additional chief secretary (home), proposing departmental action against four senior members of the investigation team for allegedly handling the probe unprofessionally and damaging the high-profile case. Besides this, he also proposed action against two other senior police officers, including Gujrat DPO Syed Ghazanfar Ali Shah and an SSP CTD, who isn’t part of the probe team, for allegedly recording a video statement of the prime suspect arrested from the attack spot and leaking it to the media.
Acting on his recommendations, the Punjab Home Department on Sunday issued notification, replacing the JIT investigating members.
According to the new notification, DPO DG Khan Muhammad Akmal, SP Anjum Kamal and DSP CIA Jhang Nasir Nawaz are now members of the JIT.
The notification says that the JIT is authorized to include fourth member as per its own discretion.
