Film Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, has been released in cinemas and is receiving glowing reviews from critics and Bollywood celebrities.
Gangubai Kathiawadi has taken the box office by storm and made impressive revenue generation. Alia Bhatt’s impressive performance and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s masterful direction ensured huge crowds in the theatres.
Gangubai Kathiawadi had a brilliant opening at the box office and was successful in bringing the crowds back to the theatres. The film opened to Rs 10.5 crore in India and is poised for a strong weekend. On the second day of release, its numbers were high as well. Based on that, trade analyst Taran Adarsh predicted Rs40 crore opening weekend for the film.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai. In the film, Alia Bhatt plays a woman named Ganga who travels from Gujarat to Mumbai with her partner but is sold off following a betrayal and ends up in a life of prostitution.
She then becomes a matriarch named Gangubai in the red light area of Kamathipura and rises to power. She advocates for the rights of women and gets a stronghold in politics.
Gangubai Kathiawadi marks the first collaboration between Alia and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film also stars Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Jim Sarbh among others. The film is facing stiff competition from Tamil film Valimai.
