ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) petition against the issuance of funds to assembly members by Prime Minister Imran Khan,

A three-member bench, headed by Irshad Qaiser, declared the PPP’s decision as not maintainable. PPP counsel Nayyar Bukhari argued that PM Imran – on March 1 – talked about giving Rs 50 crore funds to the parliamentarians.

Nayyar Bukhari said multiple sections of the Election Act, 2017 were violated, and making an announcement is also against the law. “The premier kept meeting assembly members and also disgraced the ECP which are punishable offenses,” he added.

The ECP member from Balochistan told Nayyar Bukhari that the elections of the Upper House have been conducted and no funds were released.  Another ECP member Nisar Durrani remarked, “Is there any scheme announced by the prime minister for the lawmakers?”

Later, the ECP bench said that it will announce its judgment on the maintainability of the petition. After the conclusion of the arguments, the electoral body rejected the petition.
