NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram has urged the world community to take crucial steps to ensure rule of law and sustainable development.
During his virtual address at the 14th UN Crime Congress, Munir Akram said there can be no sustainable development without justice, rule of law and prevention and control of crime.
He said, “Coordinated approaches to prevent and combat transnational organized crime is critical to recover better from the crisis and make progress towards all of the Sustainable Development Goals”.
Like all other aspects of our daily lives, the impact of Covid-19 on transnational organized crime has been significant, Munir Akram added. The ambassador said a change in labor and migration laws is also vital in addressing the demand for the services of human traffickers.
He said in the context of Covid-19, there is a need for effective action against falsified and fake medical products and to strengthen international cooperation in this regard.
Earlier, Pledging to promote Pakistan’s national interests at the United Nations, Munir Akram had said that his mission was to help advance the struggle of the people of Indian occupied Kashmir for “Azadi” and self-determination.
“Pakistan’s central endeavor will be to uphold the security and dignity of our country and to promote legitimate struggle of people of Jammu and Kashmir for ‘Azadi’ and self-determination while alerting the world to India’s threats against Pakistan,” he said.
“Challenges were always accompanied by opportunities”, referring to threats to Pakistan emanating from the East and the West.
Citing Prime Minister Imran Khan’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, Ambassador Akram said, “We are facilitating the peace process in Afghanistan and mediating reduction of tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.”
