Coronavirus death toll hits 998,721 worldwide

WASHINGTON: The global epidemic of coronavirus has infected 33,055,037 people in the world and 998,721 people have lost their lives.

The number of coronavirus infection cases across the world has surged to 33,055,037the pandemic has so far claimed over 998,721 lives. So far, 24,406,122have been cured in the world and at present, the number of active cases is 7,650,194.

The United States and India are the most affected by the virus in the world. The number of people infected with coronavirus in the United States has risen to 7,287,561 with 209,177 deaths.

India ranks second among the countries affected by the coronavirus, with more than 5,990,581 people affected and a total death toll of 94,534. Brazil is the third most affected country by the coronavirus, with more than 4,718,115 patients and 141,441 deaths.

Russia is the fourth most affected country by the coronavirus, with more than 1,143,571 people infected and 20,225 deaths. Colombia ranks fifth among countries infected with the coronavirus, with 25,296 deaths and more than 806,038 reported cases.

In Peru, more than 800,142 people have been affected and 32,142 have lost their lives. The death toll from coronavirus in South Africa has risen to 16,376 with more than 669,498 people affected.

More than 726,431 people have been affected in Mexico, while the country reported 76,243 deaths. Spain has recorded 31,232 fatalities and 735,198 infections.

In Chile, nearly 455,979 cases were confirmed, including more than 12,591 deaths. Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus death at the end of February, has 35,818 fatalities, while 308,104 infections.

Mexico has reported 76,243 deaths and 726,431 cases. Meanwhile, the death toll stands 25,394 in Iran as the confirmed number of cases is almost 443,086.

Germany has reported 9,532 deaths and 285,025 infections. Turkey reported 312,966 coronavirus cases and 7,929 fatalities.

China has to date declared 4,634 deaths and 85,351 cases, with 80,541 recoveries and 176 active cases of the virus.

Earlier, the World Health Organisation warned that coronavirus deaths could more than double to two million if safety measures are not kept up as Europe faces mounting cases and the US crossed another bleak milestone.

“One million is a terrible number and we need to reflect on that before we start considering a second million,” the WHO’s emergency director Michael Ryan told reporters when asked how much higher deaths could mount.
