KARACHI: Sindh government has extended the operational timings of cattle markets today (Tuesday). In this regard, the cattle markets will remain open from 7am-11pm.
According to a notification issued by the home department, the provincial government has made the decision in light of the National Command and Control Centre’s directives.
Traditionally, the cattle market would have remained open 24 hours a day. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the government to impose precautionary measures in order to contain the virus outbreak.
Earlier, the provincial government of Sindh had allowed the cattle markets to operate from 6am-7pm. Commissioner Karachi had also enacted Section 144 in Karachi against illegally-formed cattle markets.
Iftikhar Shalwani said that a cattle market set up without prior permission from officials would be deemed illegal. “Strict action will be taken against the formation of illegal cattle markets,” he added.
On the other hand, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr. Zafar Mirza had urged people to book sacrificial animals online so that they can avoid visits to the cattle markets where large gatherings can contribute to spreading coronavirus.
He also urged the people to observe the safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) during Eid-ul-Azha.
