Farmers announce Million March in Islamabad ahead of PTI movement

ISLAMABAD: The Kissan Ittehad has announced a “Million March” in Rawalpindi and Islamabad on September 25, just two days before Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s planned protest on September 27.

The farmers’ mobilization comes amid growing frustration over the federal government’s repeated policy reversals on wheat and sugarcane, which they say have left them vulnerable to market shocks and exploitation.

Govt’s Flip‑Flop on Wheat and Sugarcane

The announcement seemingly follows months of indecision by the federal and provincial governments over wheat imports.

Punjab and Sindh initially resisted imports, citing harm to local farmers, before shifting positions under pressure from rising flour prices.

Similar inconsistencies have plagued sugarcane policy, where support prices and procurement mechanisms have been altered without credible alternatives, leaving growers uncertain about returns.

Farmers argue these ad hoc measures reflect a lack of structural reform, forcing them to bear the brunt of inflation while millers and middlemen benefit.

Political Undercurrents and Public Sentiment

Analysts note that Punjab and Sindh’s hesitation is not only economic but political.

With the proposed 28th constitutional amendments raising fears of new provinces being carved out, both governments are wary of alienating farmers and the wider public.

Provinces backtrack on wheat imports as farmers hint at protests

Any misstep risks fueling nationalist sentiment and shifting support to local groups advocating greater autonomy. The farmers’ march, therefore, is seen as a direct challenge to provincial leadership already under pressure to retain public trust.

Army Deployment Adds Tension

Interestingly, the Kissan Ittehad’s announcement came just hours after the federal government issued a notification to deploy the Army in Rawalpindi for six months.

The timing has raised eyebrows, with opposition parties and farmer leaders questioning whether the move is intended to deter mass mobilization.

Farmers’ Mobilization Gains Momentum

With flour prices crossing Rs3,000 per 20‑kg bag in several cities and sugarcane growers facing delayed payments, the Million March is expected to draw significant participation.

Rumors of coordinated demonstrations and marches across Punjab and Sindh further highlight the scale of discontent. If realized, the protests could intensify pressure on the government to abandon short‑term fixes and pursue long‑delayed reforms in procurement, pricing, and storage.
