Greek police have made a breakthrough in the murder investigation of Scottish national Elizabeth Jane Ross, whose body was found inside a suitcase in the Kypseli district of Athens, arresting a 26-year-old Afghan national in connection with the case.
According to British media, the suspect, who is also reportedly involved in boxing, worked near the victim’s residence.
Greek authorities said the arrest was made after investigators identified the suspect through CCTV footage, bank records, and other forensic evidence.
Police believe the suspect killed the woman before placing her body inside a suitcase and abandoning it in a vacant building in Kypseli in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.
Investigators said the victim’s bank cards were used after her death, with cash withdrawn from ATMs. CCTV footage and banking records played a key role in tracing the suspect.
The investigation also revealed that several messages were sent from the victim’s mobile phone to her family after her death, falsely suggesting that she was safe and wished to spend some time alone. Police believe the messages were sent to mislead investigators and delay the discovery of the crime.
According to the preliminary forensic report, the woman is suspected to have died from asphyxiation. However, the exact cause of death will be determined after toxicology results and other scientific examinations are completed.
Greek police have charged the suspect with intentional homicide, robbery, and violations of firearms laws. Investigations into other aspects of the case remain ongoing.
The case has attracted significant attention in both Greece and the United Kingdom. British authorities are providing consular assistance to the victim’s family and remain in close contact with Greek police as the investigation continues.
