KARACHI: Karachi Port has set a new national record for container handling, crossing 2.651 million TEUs before the close of the current fiscal year.

With the milestone, Karachi Port has become Pakistan’s largest container-handling port in the country’s history, said Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.

“This record reflects growing business confidence in the maritime sector,” the minister said, crediting the achievement to reforms and modern infrastructure at the port. He added that Pakistan’s shipping and logistics capacity is steadily strengthening, and the government’s push to turn the country into a regional transshipment and logistics hub will continue.

KPT Chairman also linked the surge in cargo traffic to recent port reforms and upgraded facilities. “The historic numbers are the result of relentless work by KPT officers and staff,” he said.

Vice Admiral Shahid Ahmed, speaking at the event, noted Karachi Port’s growing role in the national economy and sea trade. He said efficient port operations are critical for exports, imports, and keeping supply chains moving.

The 2.651 million TEU mark beats previous annual handling figures and comes weeks before the fiscal year ends, suggesting final numbers could climb higher.
