KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) collected Rs4 billion under municipal tax during the current year.

According to officials, the tax is added to electricity bills and the civic body had set a target of Rs6 billion for the year, meaning it achieved around 60 percent of its revenue goal.

Financial Advisor Gulzar Ali described the performance as a significant achievement, saying that reaching 60 percent of any revenue target is “unprecedented” compared to previous years.

He also shared that the upcoming fiscal year 2026–27 budget is expected to be around Rs60 billion, which is likely to be presented by Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab in the City Council on June 18 for approval.

For development spending, the KMC plans to allocate approximately Rs37 billion, combining funds from the Sindh government and its own revenue sources.

In September 2025, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) increased the Municipal Utility Charges and Taxes (MUCT) for industrial and commercial consumers from Rs400 to Rs750.

The move drew strong criticism from the opposition, which called it a violation of “defined legal boundaries.”City & Local Guides

According to details, members of the business community complained that the MUCT being charged was nearly double the previous amount. These charges were collected from consumers within KMC’s jurisdiction through K-Electric bills.

Opposition Leader and City Council member from Jamaat-e-Islami, Advocate Saifuddin, had issued a legal notice to then K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi, demanding an immediate reversal of the MUCT hike. He argued that the increase was implemented illegally without the approval of the elected City Council.
