KARACHI: A new twist has emerged in the case of suspected drug smuggler Anmol alias Pinki, who was arrested a week ago from Nawab Town, Lahore, despite her network allegedly operating out of Karachi.

According to police sources, Anmol — accused of running a drug smuggling network in Karachi — was taken into custody by an intelligence agency from a rented house in Lahore’s Nawab Town. The accused was traced through a device locator, sources said.

Drugs worth “crores of rupees” were recovered from the premises, with investigators claiming the suspect was manufacturing narcotics herself at the rented accommodation. Police officials added that the house had been rented in the name of her second husband, a former police inspector.

The investigation has so far revealed that the accused’s supply network was active in Karachi, while no case had ever been registered against her in Lahore, according to police.

On the contrary, the address of a flat in Karachi’s Garden area — previously linked to Anmol Pinki’s arrest — has been occupied by another family for the past eight years. The family, reportedly, is “completely unaware of this whole case,” raising questions about earlier claims surrounding the location.

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar had earlier termed the case a “test case” for the provincial government, announcing the formation of a joint investigation team (JIT) comprising the Additional IG, an intelligence representative and a bureaucrat. He had also confirmed the suspension of three officers from Garden Police over the handling of the matter.

The minister had described Anmol Pinki as a “cocaine maker and a running drug factory,” stating that multiple drug gangs were operating in Karachi “because it is easy to hide here.”

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing to map the full extent of the network and determine the role of other facilitators, including any links to serving or former law enforcement officials.
